Located within the Toledo metro area, the community is the best of both worlds: close to amenities of a bigger city while maintaining a small-town feel. There are a variety of housing options as well as leisure and recreational opportunities to enjoy in Swanton.
The Village of Swanton is a Mayor-Council form of government with a full-time Village Administrator who carries out the day to day administrative operations. The Village strives to provide a high level of services to its residents.
The Village of Swanton was incorporated on February 19, 1883. The name of Swanton comes from nearby Swan Creek. There was some back and forth deciding where to locate with establishments springing up in both Fulton and Lucas Counties. With the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern rail lines, Swanton began to flourish in the mid 1850s. By 1903 the Toledo and Indiana Electric Railway was built north of the railroad tracks. It went along Broadway, crossed Main Street, and then west onto Dodge Street. In the early 1900s automobiles began to take over and the town grew even more.

I am honored to work with an exceptional banking institution with a proud history. State Bank of Defiance was founded in 1902 by Elbert E. Carter and rapidly grew into one of northwest Ohio’s leading financial institutions. Although rebuilt within its history, the main branch continues to welcome customers on the very same southwest corner of Clinton and Third Street. It was one of the few banks to remain open during the trying times of the 1930’s Great Depression. Its stability eased the financial outlook in the Defiance community. During World War II the Bank’s leaders fostered U.S. Savings Bond drives and gave direction to many local war-time agencies. State Bank’s leadership and integrity within the banking institution and community continues today as it has expanded with nineteen offices in the nine Northwest Ohio counties of Defiance, Franklin, Paulding, Fulton, Wood, Lucas, Allen, Hancock, Williams and one in Allen County, Indiana. Additionally, we have loan production offices in Angola, Indiana, Lambertville, Michigan, and Bowling Green, Tiffin and New Albany Ohio.
Applications can be submitted electronically online, faxed to 419.782.7063 or mailed to Human Resources, State Bank, PO Box 467, Defiance, OH 43512.
The Sherwood State Bank was formed in 1945 by a group of local business and community members who saw the need for a local Independent Community Bank. As the years passed, we found our business market expanding to the Defiance area we opened an in-store branch location. On August 22, 2000, after 55 years of successfully serving the Sherwood community, a second full-service branch office was opened in Defiance, Ohio. A third branch was established on March 23, 2001, when the Bank was approached by a group of community members from Ridgeville Corners, Ohio, about the need for a community bank in their location. The expansion continued as a full service facility was established in downtown Defiance on June 14, 2004. Our fourth full service branch was opened in Fayette, Ohio on April 1, 2016.
Here at The Sherwood State Bank, we pride ourselves on our dedication to Independent Community Banking with decisions that are made locally. Sauder Village is a nonprofit organization, home of Ohio’s largest living-history museum. The 235-acre complex offers a complement of food, lodging and retail services, making it an ideal destination for families, groups, small conferences and special events.
We are different than most organizations thanks to the original passion and dream of our founder, Erie Sauder who was a visionary leader. Erie established Sauder Village in 1976, not just to preserve the “things” from history, but more importantly to share the “stories” of every day people of the past. His respect and appreciation for his ancestors translated into a passion to ensure that people, and most specifically children, realize the ingenuity, hard work, sacrifice, and determination of those who came before us — and ultimately to inspire that same pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit in their lives today in hopes that they strive to make a positive difference in their world. This continues to serve as our core purpose.
In addition, an overriding commitment to service and hospitality is deeply rooted in the Sauder Village culture. Reminded of Erie’s continued example of servitude in all he did, our staff is dedicated to creating a warm and welcoming environment, offering experiences rich in history, hospitality, creativity and fun.
