I am honored to work with an exceptional banking institution with a proud history. State Bank of Defiance was founded in 1902 by Elbert E. Carter and rapidly grew into one of northwest Ohio’s leading financial institutions. Although rebuilt within its history, the main branch continues to welcome customers on the very same southwest corner of Clinton and Third Street. It was one of the few banks to remain open during the trying times of the 1930’s Great Depression. Its stability eased the financial outlook in the Defiance community. During World War II the Bank’s leaders fostered U.S. Savings Bond drives and gave direction to many local war-time agencies. State Bank’s leadership and integrity within the banking institution and community continues today as it has expanded with nineteen offices in the nine Northwest Ohio counties of Defiance, Franklin, Paulding, Fulton, Wood, Lucas, Allen, Hancock, Williams and one in Allen County, Indiana. Metamora State Bank first opened its doors in Metamora, Ohio, on July 1, 1944. Originally owned and operated by a husband and wife team with a financial base of only $1.5 million, the bank now has branches in both Metamora and Sylvania, a staff of 20 employees, and assets in excess of $70 million. We proudly celebrated our 70th anniversary year in 2014.
Through the years, Metamora State Bank has seen big changes in facilities as well as operations. Committed to growth, the bank opened a second branch in Sylvania in 1995. Located on the northeast corner of Centennial Road and Sylvania-Metamora Road, the new branch retains its small town bank image and provides the level of customer service that has kept the bank thriving for more than 70 years. The original Metamora State Bank branch was renovated in the spring of 2001, and the Sylvania Banking Center was remodeled in 2014.
